How to care for your Smock
Care Practices
To support the longevity of our pieces, we want to help you take the best possible care of your garments and have put together some sustainable clothing care practices for you to follow.
Our Fabrics
Our first collection of smocks was made with GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and threads. Using GOTS certified organic cotton means our fabrics are in a more natural state and they can therefore be prone to shrinkage so are best washed in cold water, at not more than 30 degrees.
Washing and stain removal
Before washing your smock in cold water, to help protect the fibres and colour fastness of the fabric, ensure you turn the garment inside out and fasten any buttons. Fastening the buttons ensures there's no tension on any of the openings or plackets while the smock is spinning in the machine, and helps ensure a longer life.
Machine washing softens the fabric and gives your smock a worn look. However, if you want to keep your piece looking crisp and sharp, we’d recommend spot treating any stains and, instead of washing, put it in the freezer overnight. As strange as this might sound, freezing your garment kills any bacteria and keeps them fresher for longer.
We recommend washing your garment as little as possible and airing it out instead, ideally outside on a washing line. This will freshen pieces up and get the most life out of them without having to put them in the washing machine.
Drying
Hang your smock to air dry on a rack or outside on the washing line, or alternatively lay flat, instead of using a tumble dryer. If you have a coloured smock, ensure you do not dry it in direct sunlight as this will fade the dyes.
Ironing
Go right ahead and iron out any wrinkles caused when washing your smock. Don't be afraid of the iron but only use it after the fabric has completely dried. Use a little steam while ironing and the wrinkles will disappear!
Repairs
We highly encourage repairs and alterations and hope to build this service into our business one day. In the meantime, head to your local dry cleaners to make use of their repairs and alterations services, and extend the life of your garment.
